No-code page builders allow non-technical users to easily create a website. Wix, Squarespace, Shopify and other similar platforms cater to these users. Plugins like Elementor and Divi have provided the same functionality for WordPress users. However, there are drawbacks to using them. One being, it makes your website slow.

Since version 5.0 WordPress has had its own page builder called Gutenberg. Being native to WordPress gives Gutenberg a variety of advantages over other page builders. An important one being page load speed.

How frustrating is it to wait for a website to load? On average 3 seconds is the max amount of time people will wait for a website to load. That’s why it’s important to use every conceivable tactic to improve page speed.

Gutenberg themes are fast. Here’s an article at WPTavern that helps illustrate the argument. The author tested two pages for speed. One was built in Elementor, the other was built with Gutenberg. The results were the Elementor page scored 46% on mobile and 83% on desktop. The Gutenberg page scored 94% and 99%. I’ve seen these kinds of results myself on client sites when I switch them to Gutenberg themes.

Although using a Gutenberg theme is an important tactic to improve page speed, it’s not the only one. Here’s a few more articles I’ve written about ways to improve page speed performance.
